![]() ![]() I don’t know about recommending it to someone as one of their first RPGs. The setting, presentation, and music are all top notch, so I think it’s worth a play through at least. The overarching story is really unique, but of particular note on the negative side is the infamous death monologue that stretches out for eight minutes. The story is fairly interesting but presented in a way that can get really cringy regardless of what language you play in. Once the battle system is fully unlocked later in the game, it’s really fun, but remains poorly balanced throughout (something the game’s devs are notorious for). The same goes for Persona if you liked 5, you're gonna enjoy 4 very much.Įternal Sonata is a strong contender for “World’s Okayest RPG” but mostly because for everything it does really well, it does something really wrong and it makes for an inconsistent experience. Speaking of PSN, Suikoden is a MUST-PLAY series. The FF13 Trilogy is pretty good-ish too, but IMO you're better off buying the PS1/PS2 Final Fantasies on the Playstation Network. ![]() Halfway through I was all "come ON already!!!" By the time I was FINALLY allowed to play, SEVENTEEN minutes had already passed, and I was all "OMG no." But then I got to actually PLAY, and I was all "this ain't half bad."Īs far as recommending the game goes? I'd give it a "play it if you're craving something a little less mainstream." It's not the BEST RPG in the PS3/360 libraries, but you won't have to look far to find far, FAR worse.Īs far as personal recommendations go, I gotta go with the Disgaea series, ESPECIALLY Disgaea 4. I started a new game recently, and the cutscenes kept coming. ![]() I don't think it's a bad game, but the appeal is definitely closer to something off-kilter like Nier or Saga games than it is to being a good RPG by 'mainstream' standards so I probably wouldn't recommend unless you're ok with artsy or off-the-wall games.Įternal Sonata is pretty fun, but good GOD are those cutscenes a chore to get through. The actual mechanics are decent enough, one of the better turn-based/action hybrid games I've played, but it definitely has points where it's not that fun to play because of the wonky balance.Īs a core RPG game, I don't rate it too highly, but it's definitely an interesting, unique experience. And the designers didn't really seem to realize that some characters are insanely OP (Viola) and some are unusably bad (Beat), so the difficulty swings from 'impossible to lose' to insanely bullshit, largely depending on what party the game is making you use. As in "some characters are literally more powerful on their own than 4 of the other characters are as an entire party" level of bad balance. The most notable thing is that it might be the worst-balanced RPG I've ever played. The setting and graphical style are very cool and it has sick music, which are probably its strongest points. In the PlayStation 3 version of Eternal Sonata, Allegretto's New Costume can be found by taking a warp from Jealousy Island back to Resentment Island. It's kinda interesting. To Coda is an instruction in music that "indicates that, upon reaching that point during the final repetition, the performer is to jump immediately to the separate section headed with the coda symbol." Notably, this notation is found mainly in modern music, rather than the type of pieces seen during Chopin's time. "The fifth king asked, 'Can you read what is in my heart?' The bronze bird replied, 'Jealousy.'" "The fourth king asked, 'Can you read what is in my heart?' The bronze bird replied, 'Resentment.'" "The third king asked, 'Can you read what is in my heart?' The bronze bird replied, 'Conceit.'" "The second king asked, 'Can you read what is in my heart?' The bronze bird replied, 'False pride.'" "The first king asked 'Can you read what is in my heart?' The bronze bird replied 'Betrayal.'" They make their way to the To Coda Ruins to begin their journey.Īlong the way, Allegretto may examine a number of pillars before each teleporter to a new island that tell the story of some ancient kings.
